Memphis, TN has a population of 619,000 people as of the 2020 census. Situated along the Mississippi River and bordered by the State of Mississippi on the south, and the suburbs of Germantown, Collierville, Arlington, Lakeland, Bartlett, and Millington on the east and north, this Bluff City, Home of the Blues, Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll, and sister city to Memphis, Egypt, was founded in 1819 by John Overton, Andrew Jackson, and James Winchester.
 
 
Memphis initially grew thanks to cotton farming in the South. Its growth continued as a port town because of the Mississippi River, and later, as a railroad hub. It’s also not the only Tennessee city with an acclaimed music history…from Sun Studio to Stax Records, and Elvis Presley to Johnny Cash to Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, and Justin Timberlake, Memphis is a city where music legends are made.

Downtown includes neighborhoods like the Downtown Core, Mud Island, South Main, the Bluffs, the Medical District, and Uptown. Midtown boasts areas like Evergreen-Vollintine, Central Gardens, Overton Square, and Cooper-Young. Crosstown, and Annesdale. Moving east, you’ll find Highpoint Terrace, Chickasaw Gardens, Audubon Park, Colonial Acres, and more.

Memphis is home to an NBA team and a Triple A baseball team, and at least 10 private colleges and universities, 2 public colleges and universities, and 2 community colleges. A major healthcare hub, Memphis is also home to a medical school, college of health sciences, dental school, optometry school, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Major employers include Fortune 500 companies like FedEx, AutoZone, and International Paper.
