Moving to a new home is often so exciting! But it can also be a lot. Making your transition easy and painless is undoubtedly the objective during this busy time. Here are some tips to help you get settled fast in your new home.
Tips to Help Settle into your New Home Quickly
To settle into your new home as fast as possible, it can help to address a few things before move-in day. Planning ahead for this process is really helpful as well.
- Review – Evaluate your new home and make notes of changes necessary. Do blinds need replacing or updating? Are there rooms that need painting, or will you make other changes that are easier to do before moving belongings into the space?
- Change Locks – If you can choose locks and handles you like and have them installed before moving day, that’s one less thing to worry about or delay getting done after taking possession. It’s also an option to have the current locks rekeyed with a locksmith, but it can be more expensive.
- Locate Utilities and Boxes – As you have utilities and services hooked up, consider where everything is located and make a note for when these areas need to be accessed. Can you easily get clearance for each space? For example, is the water shut-off controlled in your home or from the outside? Is the power box easy to locate? Are your sprinklers running and set up?
- Replace Alarm Batteries – Check and replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure your safety.
- Clean – Cleaning the house before it is filled with your belongings can be far easier and quicker to accomplish! If there is room in your budget, consider hiring help to arrange for cleaning before you arrive.
Unpacking in your New Home
- Bathrooms and Kitchen – Focus on your necessities first. When you pack to move from your old home, make sure to set aside your most important items to unpack first for your initial first few days in your new home!
- Bedrooms – As you start to settle in, make the area as homey and tidy as possible to feel relaxed and comfortable before addressing other rooms.
- Evaluate – Did you bring things with you that you don’t think you really need or want? Consider making a pile to stash some things you will sell or donate, and free up some space in your new home.
Appreciate your New Location
There is no need to unpack and organize in the first few days. You have worked on a large project for many months; take some time to relax a little and unpack a little every day. Rejoice in your accomplishment and celebrate your achievement.
Take some time to explore your new location and its conveniences. Look around your new neighborhood and check out your grocery store, library, parks, and fun restaurants.
