Moving into your new home is a big process. As such, it’s important to have essential items on hand for moving day so the day flows smoothly. You’ll likely already have some of these items, but if not, make sure to pick them up. Here’s my list of moving day must haves.
Moving Day Must Haves
Some of these items will be helpful for moving all of your belongings and some will be necessary for the new home you are moving into.
- Scissors or box cutters – Essential for both packing and unpacking. Consider having more than one set of scissors and box cutters available in different parts of the house to avoid too much running around, frustratingly trying to find supplies.
- Bottled drinks and some snacks – The perfect addition to moving day is fun food, healthy food, and drinks. Avoiding having to run to the store will save you time and will prevent you from ordering in at the last minute, which will also save you money and time.
- Cleaning supplies – As you wrap up moving out of your old home, you will want to have a few cleaning supplies on hand to give the space a quick final clean. These same supplies will be useful for your new home as well so you aren’t moving into a space that still has dirt or dust.
- Furniture sliders – Nothing is more helpful than sliders to easily move furniture and appliances out of your new home and into your new space. These will also be handy to prevent scratches and other damage moving can sometimes produce.
- Trash bags – Remember some large and small trash bags. You will undoubtedly have some trash both at the old home and your new place and you don’t want to be without.
- New deadbolt locks – Yes! Make sure to change out the locks on your new home before you move in or if you are storing belongings there before the big moving day. If you need to hire someone to help replace them, make sure to make arrangements ahead of moving in day. Also, don’t forget to change your garage door codes as well!
- Lightbulbs and batteries – It never fails, you will likely need both of these items between move out and move in day.
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors – Your new home will likely have smoke detectors installed already, but the batteries might be expired. Consider checking all of these before moving in and have it checked off your list soon after you move-in. Buy new ones if the old ones need updating. Toss a couple of fire extinguishers into your shopping cart, too, to be safe.
Other Moving Day Essentials
On top of the items listed above, when you first move into your new place, keep the below items on hand to provide a comfortable first night in your new home. Remember not to bury these in a box that you have to search for at the end of a long moving day. Keep them separate and consider a separate box that’s well-labeled.
- Plunger. Yep! Have it in your essentials kit as the stuff you move in first
- Medications and personal toiletries
- Important documents
- Cash, wallets, purses, cell phones (and chargers)
- Tools – even just a few basic tools will come in handy for moving day
- Valuables
- Toilet paper and tissues
- Hand soap and towels
- Lamps
