Selling your home, packing, moving, and getting resettled can be a daunting project. Usually a happy one, but still a big undertaking. Keeping your new home in order from the start is both helpful and comforting. Moving can be stressful enough, so let’s talk about unpacking after move-in while staying clutter-free.
Unpacking your Home Doesn’t Have to Mean Clutter
Work to your strengths but also to your abilities and needs while you are unpacking boxes for your new home. Hopefully, all the boxes have been labeled well and placed in their appropriate rooms or spaces when unloaded from the truck or cars. You can start emptying your boxes in a number of ways. Trying to avoid overwhelm and clutter from quickly taking over is the goal.
How to Unpack After Moving
If you like to work in batches, you can slice the tape on many boxes at once, opening them all, and then start unboxing your possessions. You can create piles or simply place them directly into cabinets, drawers, and closets if you are certain where they will go. Simply getting everything out of boxes, placed in its designated spot, and having a clean room can be good enough for unpacking.
If you want to level up your efforts, you can purchase organizers, create labels, and organize as you unpack.
The best option is the one that gives you the most satisfaction without a lot of clutter. Remember: you won’t be done in a day, but a little every day will move you toward the finish line.
Declutter While Unpacking
Do you wonder why you brought some of the things you moved with you to your new home? It’s time to start a box for things you’d like to give away.
If it’s something you really want to keep, but you still find it would clutter your new home, make sure to designate a storage area for a box with these special items. If you have this set right from the beginning, you can start off clutter-free.
How Do I Unpack Efficiently After Moving?
If you can easily put your belongings away in a closet, cabinet, dresser, or other relevant container, take the time to do so. If you need more time to organize it before you put it away, decide if you should leave it in the box for the time being, or unpack it and place it somewhere.
Sometimes leaving these items in the box can persuade you to address it sooner because you want to get the boxes out of your living space. However, if you take it out and set it in an area designated for all the items you want to later address, the box can be removed from your living space and you can address these things as you have time.
It can really depend on you and your working style. Staying clutter-free can involve some organization and a system for working through all the boxes.
How Do I Make Unpacking Less Overwhelming?
To make unpacking feel less overwhelming, start with essential items in both the kitchen and bathrooms before you work in your bedrooms, living rooms, and garage. These last few spaces can be emptied more slowly and as you have more free time. Being able to live in your new home with ease is your first goal, so focusing on your kitchen and bathrooms is key.
Don’t just unpack boxes to unpack boxes and have clutter and your possessions scattered about. Think about how you want to approach the unpacking and where you want to put your belongings in relation to your space and storage options.
Keep it fun. Play some fun music or turn on some background movies to provide a light atmosphere and focus on where to put your belongings that won’t clutter up your space.
