The topic of what to avoid when buying a new home can open the door to a different set of considerations. Buying a house will have you thinking about the type of home, style, and likely your mortgage options. But, there are a number of other areas to think about outside of these more-obvious points if you want to make sure to avoid making mistakes when buying a house.
No Nos when Buying a House
Let’s review what to consider when you are buying a new home, what to skip, and what not to disregard.
- Avoid getting advice from inexperienced people. If you have friends or family who aren’t familiar with owning or buying a new home, avoid taking their advice and ideas. Turn to trusted people in your life, and look to your real estate agent, mortgage officer, and home inspector for helpful information. Match this with your research to align with your ideas and values.
- Avoid buying a great home in a bad location. You cannot move the home or make the location better…at least not with considerable resources. Choose a home that works well for you location-wise and a neighborhood that meets your standards to make it a good fit.
- Avoid rushing. Take the time you need to decide if the home and location are a good fit. Do not skip having a home inspection because you feel rushed. And, understand the conditions and costs before you move forward to avoid heartache and difficulties after you purchase your new home. Take the time you need.
- Avoid getting too emotional. Often, you will walk into a home and instantly be drawn to it. But make sure to follow your personal home-buying checklist to confirm it is a good purchase. If you follow through the process and it doesn’t look like it’s a good option for you, don’t be afraid to keep looking and buying the right place!
- Avoid going it alone. Find a great real estate agent and utilize their expertise and skills. Choosing the right agent will help guide you well in your location choice, with your home interests, and with your complex decisions. Do your research to find someone who is highly knowledgeable and available to fulfill your home shopping and purchasing needs.
- Avoid big changes when you are buying your home with a mortgage. Once you decide to move, stay in your current role or with the company you work for during the entire process. Avoid making large purchases like a car, too. Mortgage companies can get nervous about significant changes like these.
