Selling your home is more than just putting a sign in the front yard and activating a listing online. There will be a number of things on your To Do list as you sell your home, and you will want your house to look its best and stand out for your visitors. At the same time, it’s important to talk about things that are “turn-offs” to buyers when selling your home. The last thing you want to do is inadvertently discourage people from falling in love with your home.
How to Avoid Turning Off Buyers
Here is a starter list of things to make sure to avoid when prepping your home for the market.
- Smells
- Unattractive curb appeal
- Clutter
- Dirt
- Mold
- Dark interiors
- Messy, unkempt yards
- Over-priced
Making a House Stand Out by Avoiding Buyer Turn Offs
Ensuring your home is an eye-catching listing on the MLS can take some work. But, the effort will be worth it when your home sells fast. Completing all of your typical To Dos while double-checking you aren’t guilty of turning off a potential buyer will prove to the market that your house is worth the value.
It’s best to start by evaluating your home’s overall appearance. For example, do you have a lot of clutter? Do you display a lot of personal items and have a dark interior to your home?
Look for ways to minimize or remove these distractions.
Removing clutter, packing up personal items, and donating unwanted objects will begin to open up the space in the house, too.
Having your house thoroughly cleaned top to bottom – including carpets and windows – will bring in the sunshine and make your home smell fresh.
Any lingering pet odors or musty smells might need to be addressed more vigorously. New paint or carpet might actually be necessary if cleaning didn’t help. Offensive smells are a big drawback to selling your home and should be taken seriously.
How Can I Make My House Sell Faster?
A market-aligned listing price is a good idea in any case. Also, having an experienced real estate agent listing your home will be significantly beneficial in selling your home faster. Preparing your home so that it looks and smells fresh, and is as well taken care of outside as it is inside will often sell fast.
Any negative quality of a property is an obvious reason for a buyer to be turned off. While there are some negatives that can’t be avoided, you absolutely have a lot of opportunities to minimize those negatives, and even turn some of them into positives.
